Tips for raising a cranky Quaker Parrot?

rachael asked:

From what I was told he’s about 4 years old. He won’t let anyone hold or touch him without biting them and he won’t let anyone but me come near him. He hardly ever comes out of his cage and when he does he’s ok until someone enters the room. It really upsets me that I can’t hold him and I’m worried about him. He seems fine when he’s left alone, so I don’t think he’s sick.
Please, if you have any ideas on how to calm him down or train him to be around people, I could really use the help.

Thanks

The Vulgar Parrot?

Pinky! asked:

A woman went to a pet shop and immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot. There was a sign on the cage that said $20.00.
‘Why so little?’ she asked the pet store owner.
The owner looked at her and said, ‘Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of prostitution, and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.’
The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird anyway.
She took it home and hung the bird’s cage up in her living room, and waited for it to say something.
The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, ‘New house, new madam.’
The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought ‘that’s really not so bad.’
When her two teenage daughters returned from school, the bird saw them and said, ‘New house, new madam, new girls.’
The girls and the woman were a bit offended, but then they began to laugh about the situation considering how and where the parrot had been raised.
Moments later, the woman’s husband, Keith, came home from work. The bird looked at him and said,
‘Hi Keith.’

Dani G asked:

I’m planning on owning one in about a month. Anybody know of breeders or rescues or anything located in Georgia? I’m not picky about the age/gender of the bird. I’ve had plenty of birds in my life but not ready to spend about $2,000 at petsmart where the birds aren’t even that healthy. Please anyone? Any advice is appreciated!

My handraised Amazon parrot always squats on his perch?

Tab asked:

Why does he always squat down on his perch squak, and barely lift his wings? I heard all hand raised parrots do this and why? Everyone always asks and I don’t have a reason to give. He is really cute and funny when he does it and his eyes bug out. He always also has to pick at the skin on his feet when he is being petted, this is weird also. Anyone know why?

Have you tamed a yellow nape amazon that was around 4 or 5 years old? How long did it take you?

I got my first parrot almost 2 years ago. It was a yellow nape amazon. She was almost 5 years old when I got her from a breeder. When I say she was untame. I mean she was kept in a small cage and was unable to be touched at all. I was told I would never be able to hold her. But she was a great talker. I was determined. I bought a goffin cockatoo about a month later. So she would see I meant no harm. Plus I love parrots and wanted another :) To make a long story short I think it worked. Within 9 months after buying her I could hold her, pet her, take her walking outside. She is adorable. But I still have breeders and pet store owners that it is impossible. I have had them tell me they have been raising and breeding parrots for 13 years and more and still they have never been able to tame a yellow nape amazon. I would love to hear your experiences with taming yours. :) Anne very true. I have had her for 2 years now. And now I have 4 parrots total. :) I agree everyone that is considering buying them should read up on them. I researched parrots for about a year, if not longer to make sure I knew what I was getting into. I feel so saddened when I see people buy them and mistreat them. :( They are definitely lovely animals. Along with the yellow nape amazon I am proudly owned by 2 year old goffin cockatoo, 1 year old TAG, and a Quaker that is about 8 months old :) They are like my children. They call my son bubba,…me momma, my hubby daddy :)

Quaker parrot and biting?

Saved asked:

I have a question for Zawni2004. I went into the catagory of “birds” hoping I could find an answer as to why I can’t get my Quaker Parrot to stop biting. I have raised, cockatiels, parakeets, and bred them of course. A friend of mine found this parrot in her backyard, After putting an ad in the lost and found, no one claimed it and she asked me if I would take it, but warned that he bit. I bought books on this bird, asked the vet and not one seems to know how to stop this bird from biting. I have a sign on the bottom of his cage that says “I Bite”. so people won’t stick their fingers near him. I love him, he talks, laughs, he is so funny. When he tries to bite me, I yell “no bites” he walks away, but still repeats this behavior. So Zawni, did your Quaker bite? If so, did you get him to stop or what. Thanks to anyone who can help
All answers are great, but let me clarify a little more. He has a huge cage, not above me, he’s let out every day and I put him back at night. I’ve had him for 2yrs now. I never laugh at his biting and I have also tapped his beak when he tries. He knows I am not afraid of him because I still put my bare hand in his cage to feed and water. Toys? I’m always buying him toys. I just love him so much regarless of his misbehaving. I also thought someone let him go because of that biting. We live in the North where we get a lot of snow. I think it’s cruel to set a bird like that free in our type of weather. Thanks for your answers.

FOX asked:

A man saw a beautiful parrot at the bird-selling market, and the seller asked for 10000 dollars.

“Why such a high price?” the man asked.
“It’s sinple,” the seller replied, “This would be the cleverest parrot you’ve ever seen. It could talk everything!”

The man listened to seller and bought it.

When they were home. The man put the cage which with the parrot inside in front of him, and started to teach it to talk.

The man, “I can walk.”, waitting for the reply.
The parrot, “I can walk.”, feeling boring.

The man, “I can run.”, happily.
The parrot, “I can run too!”, felling a little bit angry.

The man, “I can fly!”, raising up his voice.
The parrot, “Bullshi*, Are you out of your mind?! ”
The question is simple, “Would you like to take a look?” Hehe….

Which parrot is right for me?

x_chick03 asked:

I have wanted a parrot as long as I can remember. I have had other birds, my mother and I had two cockatiels for several years, I also had a yellow budgie I got when I was 10 that just passed away two years ago. My grandmother also raised canaries and lovebirds. And I’ve spent about the last 6 months looking into finally getting a parrot. I’m not concerned with appearance or talking, I want a friendly, companion bird. I don’t mind some noise, god knows my budgie was really loud, but I don’t want it to be loud all the time. I’ll be able to spend a great deal of time with it, but if for some reason I can’t, I want the bird to be okay with it. I have two german shepherds but I don’t think they’d bother it. They never paid attention to the budgie and they are well behaved and easily trainable. I’ve been considering African greys (my personal favorite), senegals, amazons and conures. What would be the best fit for me?
Just to clarify a little more, money isn’t a huge concern. If I have to save up a little longer to the bird that I really want, then that’s fine. I have been doing a lot of research and talking to people who own parrots, but I still don’t know which is for me. I am leaning towards a Senegal, even though I really want a Grey, because I know Greys require tons of attention and while I think I could keep it happy, I am not certain. As for conures, I was considering the green checked and blue crowned because I know suns are quite noisy all the time.
